Glaucoma Training and Accreditation for UK Optometrists

A training and accreditation programme to support the LOCSU Level 1 a&b (IOP and Visual Field Refinement) and Level 2 (OHT Monitoring) enhanced service pathways has been developed by WOPEC and LOCSU.

The package consists of distance learning lectures on CD Rom, covering referral criteria, optic nerve assessment, visual fields tonometry and assessment of the angles. In addition there are short videos on Goldmann tonometry, including calibration, and Van Herick’s technique. Optometrists will need a unique access code to register on the WOPEC website and obtain a copy of the CDs. LOCs who have Optometrists wishing to undertake this training should contact Janice Phillips janicephillips@locsu.co.uk requesting the number of access codes needed.

Practitioners with an access code can register or enter MCQ answers.

A template for a practical skills assessment has been designed to complement the distance learning. The assessments can be organised locally, and a number of Lead Optometric Assessors from across England and Wales have been trained by WOPEC to facilitate these assessments.
